Dans toute société le travail est un sujet de préoccupation majeur. Il occupe une place prépondérante dans la vie d’un homme, il en détermine en partie l’identité, il en structure l'existence.

Bien que le travail soit un lien social reconnu universellement, souvent nos différentes professions nous séparent. Lorsque quelqu’un nous parle de son travail, de ses difficultés ou de son plaisir à travailler, nous avons du mal à le comprendre et à partager son vécu si nous n’exerçons pas le même travail que lui. Absorbés par nos occupations professionnelles, nous connaissons mal le travail des "autres" et nous nous interrogeons peu.

Pour sortir de cette indifférence, les témoignages des photographes, des cinéastes, des artistes, des poètes ou des écrivains sont nécessaires.

Les séries photographiques présentées dans le neuvième numéro de purpose nous plongent dans l’univers du travail d’hier et d’aujourd’hui. Elles nous ouvrent les portes des bureaux, des usines, des entreprises, des hôpitaux, nous montrent les coulisses des magasins, des supermarchés… qui d’habitude sont des lieux privés et inaccessibles. Les photographies nous permettent de voir qu’au gré des évolutions technologiques et économiques, les formes du travail changent, que de nouvelles conditions modifient notre rapport au travail : gestes et postures s’adaptent aux nouveaux équipements et aux nouvelles machines.

Attentifs au monde du travail, les photographes essaient d’en comprendre le fonctionnement : ils sont fascinés par la répétition des gestes ou par la figure du travailleur, certains s’intéressent plus à l’environnement, d’autres donnent du travail une image plus critique.

La profusion d’images publicitaires, de recettes pour vivre mieux, d’images au service de la communication, participe à une frustration quotidienne. Travailler plus pour gagner plus pour consommer plus ? Faire tourner l'économie au profit de qui ? S'interroger sur le sens de notre travail revient à s'interroger sur le sens de notre existence…

Photographier le monde du travail est essentiel : cela nous aide à comprendre que travailler ne signifie pas seulement gagner de l’argent. Derrière chaque travail il y a des hommes, il y a un monde fait de relations et de sentiments : l’amitié, la haine, le respect, la soumission, la solidarité, l’ennui, le stress, le bonheur, le courage, la peine…

Photographier le monde du travail, c'est lui rendre hommage, s’opposer à sa déshumanisation, sa dévalorisation, et lutter contre l’instrumentalisation des individus.

Work is a major issue in every society. It holds an important place in our lives, it determines part of our identity and structures our existence.

Even though work provides a universally recognized social link, we are often separated by our different professions. When someone speaks to us about work, about their difficulties with it or the pleasure that it gives them, it is often difficult for us to understand and to share these experiences if we do not have the same job. Absorbed by our professional occupations, we know little about the work of others and ask few questions.

To move beyond this sense of indifference, the work of photographers, filmmakers, artists, poets and writers is necessary.

The photographic series that are presented in the 9th edition of purpose take us into the world of work, past and present. They open the doors of offices, factories, companies, and hospitals, they take us behind the scenes of shops and supermarkets, places that are normally private and off-limits. These photographs allow us to see how work is changing with the evolution of technology and of economics. The forms of work are changing and the new conditions that are emerging are changing our relationship with work: our gestures and posture are adapting to new equipment and machinery.

Attentive to the world of work, photographers try to understand the way that it functions: they are fascinated by the repetition of gestures or by the figure of the worker. Some are more interested by the work environment, others have a more critical approach.

The proliferation of advertising imagery, of recipes for better living, of images made for communication, contributes to a sense of daily frustration. Working more to earn more and to consume more? Keeping the economy going, but for who’s benefit? Questioning the meaning of our work is equivalent to questioning the meaning of our existence…

Photographing the world of work is essential: it helps us to understand that work is not simply about making money. Behind each job there are men, there is a world of relationships and emotions: friendship, hate, respect, submission, solidarity, boredom, stress, happiness, courage and grief…

Photographing the world of work is to pay tribute, to stand in the way of its dehumanisation, its devaluation, and to fight against the instrumentalisation of the individual.

13e Quinzaine Photographique Nantaise

Samedi 19 septembre, la nuit tombée, au jardin des plantes de Nantes, aura lieu la nouvelle projection organisée par purpose.

Invité par la Quinzaine Photographique Nantaise à donner sa vision de la thématique qui parcourt cette année le festival, purpose a choisi de consacrer une projection aux liens affectifs et naturels qui unissent les individus et qui sont au fondement de l'organisation sociale : l'amour, l'amitié, la filiation. De nombreux artistes, explorant leur environnement quotidien, prennent spontanément pour sujet leur propre famille ou leurs cercles d'amis. Ils partagent avec le public une part de leur intimité mais transcendent aussi l'apparente banalité de ce sujet — nous photographions tous nos proches et la "photo de famille" est un genre riche et important dans l'histoire de la photographie. De manière souvent très émouvante, ils donnent à voir les rapports humains, dans ce qu'ils ont de plus intimes et de plus précieux. Le photographe est alors à la fois anthropologue et poète.

La projection, intitulée "Si proches", présentera les photographies d’Aglaé Bory (France), Samantha Contis (USA), Amaury da Cunha (France), Doug DuBois (USA), Mathieu Grac (France), Pascal Hausherr (France), Colleen Heslin (USA), Wilma Hurskainen (Finlande), Ute Klein (Allemagne), Robert Knight (USA), Jamel Shabazz (USA), Alessandra Sanguinetti (USA) et Andreas Weinand (Allemagne).

Cette 13e édition explore le thème de la "Nature humaine". Le sujet sera décliné en deux opus : "Nous" en 2009, "Je" en 2010.

Saturday, September 19, after nightfall, at the botanical garden of Nantes, will be the new projection organized by purpose.

Invited by the "Quinzaine Photographique Nantaise" to give his vision of the theme running through this year's festival, purpose has dedicated a projection to the affective and natural ties that unite individuals and that are the basis of social organization: love , friendship, filiation. Many artists, exploring their everyday surroundings, chose spontaneously as subject their own families or circles of friends. They share with the audience some of their privacy but also transcend the apparent banality of this subject — we all photograph our family and "family photo" is a rich and important style in the history of photography. So often very moving, they show human relationships in that their most intimate and most precious. The photographer is then both anthropologist and poet.

The projection, titled "Si proches" (So Close), will present photographs of Aglaé Bory (France), Samantha Contis (USA), Amaury da Cunha (France), Doug DuBois (USA), Mathieu Grac ( France), Pascal Hausherr (France), Colleen Heslin (USA), Wilma Hurskainen (Finland), Ute Klein (Germany), Robert Knight (USA), Jamel Shabazz (USA), Alessandra Sanguinetti (USA) and Andreas Weinand (Germany) .
