Malgré une carrière relativement jeune (ses premières séries datent des années 1990) le travail d'Alec Soth fait figure depuis quelques temps déjà de nouveau classique de la photographie nord-américaine. Inspirateur de nombreux de ses contemporains, il poursuit avec talent le travail de documentariste initié par ses prestigieux aînés, photographes voyageurs tels que Walker Evans, William Eggleston ou Joel Sternfeld, dont il a été l'élève. L'Amérique d'Alec Soth est assez mélancolique ; on y rencontre beaucoup de solitude et de marginalité et, parce qu'il a de la tendresse pour ses concitoyens, Alec Soth sait aussi s'en amuser. Le très beau travail d'édition de cet ouvrage publié à l'occasion de l'exposition From Here to There: Alec Soth's America (commissariat de Siri Engberg, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, du 12 septembre 2010 au 2 janvier 2011) rend aussi hommage à un photographe qui aime fabriquer ses propres livres : on trouvera en supplément un petit livre d'artiste, The Lonliest Man in Missouri. Although Alec Soth’s career is relatively recent (his first series date from the 90s), his work is considered today as a new North American photography classic. Inspiring many of his contemporaries, Alec Soth is pursuing with talent the documentary work of famous travelling photographers, such as Walker Evans, William Eggleston and Joel Sternfeld, of whom he was a student. Soth’s America is rather melancholic; his pictures show solitude and marginality, which are treated with amusing tenderness. This beautiful edition published on occasion of the exhibition From Here to There: Alec Soth's America curated by Siri Engberg at the Walker Art Center of Minneapolis (from 12th September 2010 to 2nd January 2011), also pays a tribute to a photographer who loves creating his own books: the edition comes with an extra artist’s book entitled The Loneliest Man In Missouri.
